The Veterinary Center for Birds & Exotics (www.avianexoticsvet.com), owned by Laurie Hess, DVM, Diplomate ABVP (Avian Practice) (www.LaurieHessDVM.com), in Bedford Hills, NY (about 50 miles north of NYC), is seeking applicants for a 2-year ABVP avian/exotics residency (to pursue ABVP board-certification in avian medicine), to begin in July, 2019. Applicants must have completed a 1-year internship in small animal medicine & surgery or avian/exotic animal medicine and surgery.
The Veterinary Center is a modern, progressive, high-volume, 3-doctor paperless practice that treats only birds & other exotic pets (reptiles, rabbits, ferrets, rodents, amphibians, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, pot-bellied pigs, kinkajous, wallabies) plus wildlife – no dogs or cats. Located in an affluent suburb of Westchester County, NY, the Center provides full medical, surgical, emergency and boarding care for these pets & receives referrals from NY, NJ, and CT. It is the only AHAA-accredited bird & exotics specialty referral hospital in NY and only 1 of 5 worldwide. The Center has on-site ultrasound, digital x-rays, CT, 3 endoscopes, and cold-laser therapy and receives support from other local veterinary specialists including a board-certified cardiologist, radiologist, internist, surgeon, & ophthalmologist. Overnight & emergency care are provided by a 24-hour hospital 1/4 mile away. All of the Veterinary Center’s technicians are licensed, and we practice the highest quality, up-to-date avian and exotic animal medicine.
We are looking for individuals not only with a passion for exotic pet medicine but also with strong communication skills who want to work closely with clients and be a part of an enthusiastic team of bird & exotic pet lovers who strive to make a lasting difference in the world of exotic pet care.
Benefits include a paid health care, continuing education, and vacation time, low-cost personal pet care, as well as mentoring in avian medicine and running an avian/exotics private practice, by board-certified/USDA accredited avian veterinarian, Dr. Hess, and residency-trained veterinarian, Dr. Amanda Marino. In addition, the Veterinary Center’s location provides easy access to both the benefits of the country (hiking, skiing, biking, etc.), as well as the culture of nearby New York City. Having lived in Westchester County for more than 20 years, Dr. Hess will provide residents with guidance as where to look for safe and affordable housing.
Interested candidates should contact Dr. Hess ASAP at (914) 450-4281 or (914) 864-1414 and send resume ASAP to Lhess@avianexoticsvet.com.
