AEMV E-Newsletter Message from Dr. Joerg Mayer, AEMV President

Recipient of the 2010 Oxbow Animal Health Award Announced

AEMV President-Elect, Dr. Vittorio Capello, is the recipient of the 2010 Oxbow Animal Health Exotic Mammal Health Professional Award. Oxbow Animal Health, a leader in providing premium nutrition for small exotic animals worldwide, has named Dr. Vittorio Capello as the winner of the 2010 Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award. Established in 2009, the Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award is an annual award presented to an animal health professional who advances the field of exotic mammal medicine and care. Dr. Capello, a veterinarian specializing in exotic animal medicine in Milan, Italy, was presented with the award at the 2010 AAV/AEMV Conference in San Diego, California on August 1st, followed by a reception in his honor on August 3rd.

“We could not be more excited to recognize Dr. Capello and his contributions to the field of small exotic medicine,” said John Miller, President of Oxbow Animal Health. “Dr. Capello’s reputation as a leader, teacher and advocate in the small exotics field is world renowned. His work is a testament to everything the Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award stands for.”

Dr. Capello has lectured, published and taught exotic animal courses and practical laboratories throughout Italy, other parts of Europe and US, and has been a guest lecturer for four years at the International Conference on Exotics, where he was voted most appreciated speaker in 2003 and 2004 and received the Exotic DVM Paper of the Year Award in 2005. Dr. Capello served as speaker at the North American Veterinary Conference, the British Small Animal Veterinary Conference, and the European Congress of Veterinary Dentistry. He is author of the “Rabbit and Rodent Dentistry Handbook” and “Clinical Radiology of Exotic Companion Mammals” and has both written and served as guest editor for numerous publications, including the Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine and Exotic DVM Magazine. He is a member of the advisory board of Exotic DVM magazine and member of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians (AEMV).

The Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award is based on excellence in one or more of the following areas: exhibiting leadership in the field of exotic mammal health, advancing the understanding of clinical diseases and treatments in exotic mammal pets, promoting the field of exotic mammal medicine, promoting the field of exotic mammal nutrition or providing innovation to the field of exotic mammal medicine. Nominations are made by submitting a CV and letter of recommendation describing the individual and how they exemplify the above qualities. Nominations for the Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award, including the CV and a letter of recommendation, must be received by no later than May 1st of the award year, and should be sent to Dr. Micah Kohles at Oxbow Animal Health at 29012 Mill Rd. AEMV has achieved yet another goal and are proud to announce the availability of our "In Memoriam" cards. Dr. Vittorio Capello provided his expert graphic artistry in designing the overall look of the cards and they are now ready for purchase.

We have them available in packs of 10 cards with envelopes for $50.00. All proceeds go directly into the AEMV Research Fund.

AEMV Announces Research Fund for 2010

AEMV announced and began accepting contributions for a fund to promote clinical research that will be of benefi t to veterinary care of exotic companion mammals. The official AEMV Research Fund was announced and got off to a phenomenal start during the Scientific Session on Sunday, August 9th. Nearly $2,000.00 was raised at the annual conference. Dr. Joerg Mayer is the Research Fund Chair and progress on the fund, application process, etc. will be posted on the site so stay tuned for details.

Dr. Dan Johnson, AEMV Treasurer, was surprised by the announcement that if $1,000.00 was raised by the end of the day of our session, he would shave his legs during the annual business meeting. Needless to say, our goal was surpassed by noon with almost $1,500.00. AEMV thanks Dan for being such a good sport about the event and to all the donors for their generosity.

Exotic Companion Mammal Practice (ECM) Specialty

On April 12, 2008, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) granted provisional recognition to the first completely new veterinary specialty since 1993, called Exotic Companion Mammal Practice (ECM). Click here for details.

AEMV Member Dr. Paul Gibbons Named Exotic Practitioner of the Year by Zoological Education Network

Congratulations to AEMV member Dr. Paul Gibbons, who was awarded the Exotic Practitioner of the Year by Zoological Education Network at the annual ARAV conference. The award was presented by Dr. Kevin Wright.
