QUALIFICATIONS: Veterinarian (DVM or equivalent) with advanced expertise in zoological companion animal medicine and surgery is required. Board-certified or board eligible by the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) by the effective date of appointment is required. Clinical experience and competence in zoological companion animal medicine and surgery is required; clinical experience in aquatic animal health including pet fish is desired. Demonstrated aptitude/experience in teaching zoological companion animal medicine and surgery is required. For the Assistant/Associate Professor of Clinical Zoological Companion Animal Medicine and Surgery position, a documented record of creative scholarship or the potential to develop a clinical research program in the discipline is required. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere, and demonstrated (or potential) accomplishment in areas contributing to diversity and inclusion. A valid license to practice veterinary medicine in California is required before employment begins (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846-4857). Individuals without a full California license must obtain a University License (California Business and Professions Code Section 4848.1) by the time of appointment.

Clinical: The position has a 70% (Professor of Clinical X series) or 90% (Health Sciences Clinical Professor series) clinical effort assignment to the Companion Avian and Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery Service of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). The individual will be responsible for directing, instructing, and supervising veterinary students and house officers and technicians; providing health care and service to patients; and advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients; providing medical and surgical service to birds (including backyard poultry), reptiles, amphibians, fish, and small mammal patients in addition to small zoological collections.

Teaching: The primary teaching responsibility will be direct daily supervision and clinical instruction of senior DVM students and house officers rotating through the Companion Avian and Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery Service. Other responsibilities include: 1) participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum; 2) all aspects of clinical teaching in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH); 3) participation in the graduate clinical (resident) training program of the VMTH; and 4) continuing professional education. Must demonstrate excellence in teaching.

Professional Competence: Will advance the discipline of zoological companion animal medicine within the VMTH, as well as locally and nationally, through participation and leadership in providing high-quality patient care in the hospital environment. Expected to establish a reputation for clinical excellence locally, regionally, and nationally, depending upon the level of appointment. Expected to be ACZM board certified within three years of appointment. Must demonstrate clinical competence and be recognized for accomplishment in a focused area of clinical practice.

Creative Scholarship: Faculty in the Professor of Clinical series are expected to advance the clinical discipline through the creation and dissemination of new knowledge with documentation from peer-reviewed publications. Creative/scholarly activities are required for individuals in this series, but in view of the increased responsibilities for clinical service and teaching, the type of scholarly activity may focus primarily on integrating/improving clinical care, conducting clinical research studies, and/or improving veterinary medical education.

Creative scholarship is an expectation for faculty in the Health Science Clinical Professor series, typically derived from clinical teaching and professional service activities. Examples of activities qualifying as creative scholarship in this series include participation in the advancement of professional education; publication of case reports or clinical reviews; development of or contributions to administration (supervision) of a clinical service; or development of or contributions to clinical guidelines or pathways.

Service: University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, and other appropriate means is required. Active participation and engagement in developing/maintaining continuing education activities of the VMTH as it relates to companion avian and exotic animal medicine and surgery is required.
